In the first stanza the following couplets express speakerââ¬â¢s scorn for the young who disregard the world of art: The young in one anothers arms, birds in the trees / Those dying generationsââ¬âat their song / Caught in that sensual music all neglect / Monuments of unageing intellectIn the second stanza, the speaker declares his interest in leaving the sensual world and entering the intellectual paradise of Byzantium: An aged man is but a paltry thing, / A tattered coat upon a stick, unless / And therefore I have sailed the seas and come / To the holy city of Byzantium. The last two stanzas of the poem, which deal exclusively with the world of Byzantium, fail to make such declarations and are not self-contained rhetorical statements. Thus, the poemââ¬â¢s form can be seen as a regression from certainty to uncertainty, which suggest that the speaker feel apprehension in Byzan tium and still retains allegiance to his native Ireland. Furthermore, the speakerââ¬â¢s alienation and apprehension in Byzantium is also conveyed by the third coupletââ¬â¢s ambiguous language and the fourthââ¬â¢s clever inversion of the second coupletââ¬â¢s rhyme scheme. The third stanza ends with this couplet: It knows not what it is; and gather me / Into the artifice of eternity. This coupletââ¬â¢s ambiguity is highlighted by its use of the unspecific pronoun ââ¬Å"itâ⬠rather than a more concrete word ââ¬Å"heartâ⬠and invokes the idea of alienation through the statement, ââ¬Å"It knows not what it is.â⬠The word ââ¬Å"artificeâ⬠in the second line of the couplet echoes the words ââ¬Å"artâ⬠and ââ¬Å"artificialâ⬠thus suggesting that the artistic and artificial world of Byzantium causes the speaker feelings of alienation. Furthermore, the final couplet in the poem does not leave the reader with a positive impression of the speakerââ¬â¢s fate, but instead reinforces the view of Byzantium as an alienating environment. Raymond Cowell, a prominent literary critic, argues that the final couplet leaves such an impression by inverting the rhyme scheme of couple two. ââ¬Å"As a particular ironic twist Yeats reverses the final rhymes of stanza two when he reaches the final rhymes of the last stanza. In stanza two the speaker has ââ¬Ëcome toââ¬â¢ Byzantium in a state of triumphant expectation; the couplet proclaims the positive. In stanza four, the order is reversed and the speaker moves beyond the nobility of Byzantium, to the future ââ¬Ëto comeââ¬â¢ which is contained in the birdââ¬â¢s song; the couplet is broken open, with the future left uncertainâ⬠(Cowell, Literary Critiques: W.B. Yeats, 144). The impression of uncertainty echoes the impression of uncertainty and apprehension conveyed by the last lines of couplet three, thus implying that Byzantium can neither alleviate the speakerââ¬â¢s anxiety nor offer him salvation. In contrast, the beginning of the poem evokes numerous images of animals and citizens of Ireland copulating and pursuing their own hedonist desires. Yeats also uses contrasting images to convey the pretentious nature of Byzantium as the speaker, despite his transformation into a golden bird is not able to create eternal art. Carol Morgan asserts that the speakerââ¬â¢s ability to create art in Byzantium, through his singing, is a critical factor that ultimately validates Byzantium as a destination of salvation (Morgan 144). Other critics of the poem, including T. Sturge Moore, refute Morganââ¬â¢s contention and instead view Byzantium as a pretentious place that denies the speaker the ability to create lasting ar t. Moore bases his analysis on the beginning line of the last stanza and the ending line of the poem. He asserts that the speaker cannot sing of ââ¬Å"what is past, or passing, or to comeâ⬠if the speaker is ââ¬Å"out of natureâ⬠. In other words, how can the speaker create lasting art if he is completely removed from life? According to Moore, ââ¬Å"art is dependent on lifeâ⬠(Cowell 102). Yeats contrasts this image of the eternal golden bird singing of ââ¬Å"what is past, or passing or to comeâ⬠with images of birds in the natural world to suggest that only the natural world provides a domain that fosters great art. The birds, in the opening stanza of the poem, sing a sensual yet transient song that is appreciated by young lovers in Ireland. In contrast, the golden bird sings for eternity yet his singing only serves the purpose of keeping the ââ¬Å"drowsy Emperor awake.â⬠Ironically, the speakerââ¬â¢s art is not appreciated in a world that represents the pinnacle of classical art, thus implying the pretension of Byzantium. From wearing his underwear to owning every one of his videos, I yearned to become Superman. This, however, was obviously impossible. Superman can fly, create a laser beam from his eyes, and he can lift the heaviest of objects. Thus, not being a totally clueless kid, it was the ideals of being a man, that superman possessed, that I tried to copy: having incredible strength, being flagrantly courageous, and being heroic. This, through my admiration of Superman, is what I thought a man should be. Some would say that aggressive male behavior is innate; however, it also has to do with the glamorously powerful superheroes that act as role models to males as they are growing up. Superman?s incredible strength has led him to victory over even the biggest and strongest of enemies. Watching him, I thought I could prove my strength by defeating other kids. It is from these images that teach kids, from the beginning, that being fat and weak is ugly. This translated into the ?ugly? kids being made fun of. I, too, fell into the trap of mocking others, who were not perfect, when I was a kid. I also remember trying to hide any blemish of my own body, so that I would not become a victim of the scorn. Besides the many physical strengths of a superhero, they also possess great mental strengths. It takes allot of courage to deal with evil villains and all their devious trickery. Superman encounters many difficult and virtually impossible challenges, and manages to take them head on without any evidence of fear on him. Watching him be so courageous had great impacts on me as a kid. I never liked to cry, especially if others were watching. That was probably the worst thing you could get caught doing in elementary school. Another effect it had on me was that I never showed fear even if I was petrified. An example of this would be with the first time I sat on a roller coaster. Although I was completely scared to go on the Vortech when I was eight years old, every one else was going on it. Instead of getting ridiculed by the others, I decided to suck in my fear and hop on the ride. There were many other examples just like this one in my life: swimming, diving, and bungee jumping are just a few.
